This mountain is our Moby Dick. We have had several attempts to climb it on skis but have not been successful. You have to bring a week in order to make sure that you can actually get to the top. The weather sometimes simply does not open up.
Starting from the town, you go up to the meteorological station. This station is basic, without heating. It is not advisable to go up if you get wet on the way.
Mt Kazbek is climbed on skis every year, so there already is quite some experience. It cannot be done without guides, because these are also responsible for maintaining the meteo-station. Given the local weather conditions, it is also very advisable to have someone with local knowledge.
Locals have said that there is a wonderful long run at the back of the mountain, but we have not yet identified it. Mt Kazbek would definitely be one of the points in the intended Haute Route Caucasus.
